Bibi Stockholm: A Home on the Water is Tanaz Khamea’s account of a journey that begins at fifteen, when she leaves her homeland in search of a new home. Across borders, through forests and rivers, and among strangers whose paths briefly cross her own, the journey eventually leads her to an unlikely refuge: the Bibi Stockholm, a home floating on water.
Years later, she encounters the Bibi Stockholm again. The vast vessel, with its small rooms sheltering people displaced from across the world, draws her back to the journey she once made and to the memories she has carried ever since. But it also brings her face to face with all that she has witnessed in the years between, now as a journalist telling the stories of those whose lives have been reshaped by war, migration and displacement.
Bibi Stockholm is not simply the story of one person’s migration. It is a story of people too often reduced to words such as “refugee”, “case” or “statistic” — people with names and faces, histories and hopes of their own.
